About American Interior:

Originally released in 2014, American Interior has been remastered for 2025 and will be released for the first time on Rough Trade, featuring bonus tracks that have long been out of print on LP and never released digitally.

In 2012, Gruff Rhys embarked on an extraordinary solo "investigative concert tour" across America, retracing the steps of his distant relative, 18th-century Welsh explorer John Evans. Each night, Rhys performed songs alongside a PowerPoint presentation, uncovering Evans’s bizarre and tragic journey—including his search for a mythical Welsh-speaking Native American tribe and his own unmarked grave. This one-of-a-kind tour took him from major cities to Native reservations, a Missouri vineyard, ghost towns submerged beneath the Mississippi, and even a New Orleans bordello.

The journey inspired a multimedia project—an album, a book, a film, and an extensive tour—all under the name American Interior. Now, in 2025, Gruff Rhys returns with a full band to revisit the album and its unforgettable story.

Between 2012 and 2014, I immersed myself in this project—writing an album, making a documentary, and performing in character for two years straight (wearing the same clothes the entire time for cinematic continuity, like a frozen extra from The Revenant). It was the most ambitious undertaking of my life, and it took years to process. Now, I feel compelled to bring these songs back to the stage and share the story with a new audience. To mark the occasion, Rough Trade is releasing a remastered edition of the album, featuring previously unreleased tracks.”*
