CECIL HARFIELD - The George Mitchell Collection - Vinyl
By George Mitchell's own account, Cecil Barfield stood out as his most remarkable discovery outside of Mississippi. Born in 1922, Barfield spent his life as a farmer until a back injury compelled him to retire. His musical journey began at the age of five, using a makeshift guitar made from a cooking oil can with a single string. Progressing to a proper guitar at 12, he initially played rag tunes and dance pieces before developing his distinctive bottleneck style, a technique evident in the Mitchell recordings. During these sessions, Barfield interpreted songs by JB Lenoir, Frankie Lee Sims, Little Walter, Tommy McClennan, and showcased several of his own original compositions.
