Billie Marten - Flora Fauna - Vinyl
"Flora Fauna" marks the third album from Billie Marten, an artist whose roots trace back to the picturesque landscapes of North Yorkshire, surrounded by the musical influences of Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Joan Armatrading, and Kate Bush. Her journey began with the critically acclaimed debut album "Writing of Blues and Yellows" in 2016, released when she was just 17. The follow-up, "Feeding Seahorses By Hand," continued to garner praise in 2019, reaching #53 in the UK album chart.
Recorded with Rich Cooper in London, "Flora Fauna" showcases Marten's evolution as an artist. While her signature hushed and resonant vocals remain, they are now complemented by a rapid pulse and rich instrumentation. Marten's musical palette expands, drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as krautrockers Can, Broadcast, Arthur Russell, and Fiona Apple.
The album builds upon the minimalist acoustic folk foundations that initially defined Marten's work. However, "Flora Fauna" presents a more mature and embodied sound, anchored by a robust backbone of bass and rhythm. Departing from the timidity of previous work, the songs embrace a more urgent and dynamic quality, marking a period of personal independence for Marten. The album reflects her journey of self-nurturing and breaking free from toxic relationships, with a significant part of that process involving a return to nature.
